The one troy ounce silver Britannia coin is one of the most famous British investment coins. It is minted by The Royal Mint, and the classic British motif symbolizes the country's strength, unity and long-standing connection with the sea. The reverse of the coin depicts a helmeted Britannia holding a trident and a shield with the motif of the United Kingdom flag. The design, created by Philip Nathan, was first used on the 1987 gold Britannia coin, and later became the basis for the silver series. The coin contains one troy ounce – 31.10 g of pure silver. The 2013 and newer coins are usually minted in 999 fine silver. Previous issues, from 1997 to 2012, were made in 958 fine silver, but they also contain a full one troy ounce of pure silver; due to the lower fineness, their total weight is higher. The obverse depicts the official portrait of the monarch used in the United Kingdom in the specific year of issue. Depending on the year, this may be one of the portraits of Queen Elizabeth II or the image of King Charles III. The face value of the coin is 2 pounds sterling. Newer coins use additional security features: microtext, surface animation, heraldic lines and a changing image of the lock and trident. Earlier issues may not have these features, so the appearance of a specific coin depends on its year of issue. Since coins of random years are sold, the specific year, portrait of the monarch, silver fineness, total weight, design details and security features may differ from the example shown in the product photo. All coins retain the main investment feature - one troy ounce of pure silver.
