The 2026 silver coin “Hyena” is part of the long-running African Ounce series, dedicated to the unique fauna of the African continent. The series began in 2008, and each year a different African animal is presented on the reverse of the coin. The heroine of the 2026 issue is the spotted hyena. The reverse of the coin depicts hyenas with a cub against the background of the outline of the African continent. The composition is complemented by the series name AFRICAN OUNCE, the year of issue and the inscription 1 oz FINE SILVER 999, indicating the weight and fineness of the coin. The spotted hyena is one of the most recognizable predators of Africa. Although often considered a mere scavenger, it is an effective hunter, distinguished by its strong jaws, endurance and complex social structure. Hyenas live in clans, in which the females occupy an important place, and their loud “laughter”-like voice is used for mutual communication. The coin is minted from 999 fine silver and contains one troy ounce – 31.10 g of pure silver. Its diameter is approximately 40 mm, and its face value is 50 Rwandan francs. The standard coin is presented in Brilliant Uncirculated quality. The obverse depicts the coat of arms of the Republic of Rwanda. In its center, a traditional wicker basket surrounded by coffee and sorghum branches, as well as elements of a sun, a gear, shields and a rope symbolizing unity are visible. Around the coat of arms, the name of the country, the national motto and the denomination of the coin are presented. This issue is suitable for both physical silver accumulation and African wildlife-themed collections. The design changes annually, the amount of silver in one troy ounce and the recognizable African Ounce series give the coin additional collector appeal.
