The obverse of the coin depicts an expressive Native American profile and the inscription LIBERTY.
The reverse depicts an American bison surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The coin's denomination, gold weight, and fineness are also indicated. Both coin designs are based on the motifs of the 1913 Buffalo Nickel coin by sculptor James Earle Fraser.
