The reverse of the coin features a Canadian maple leaf, the country's name, the gold standard, and the amount of pure gold. Newer issues use precise radial lines and a microscopic laser-etched maple leaf with the year of issue. Older coins do not have these additional security features. The coin contains one troy ounce, or approximately 31.10 g, of pure gold. Most coins issued since late 1982 are minted in 999.9 fine gold. Early issues from 1979 to 1982 were minted in 999 fine gold, but they also contain one full troy ounce of pure gold. The One Troy Ounce Gold Maple Leaf Coin is one of the most recognizable Canadian bullion coins in the world. It is minted at the Royal Canadian Mint, and the reverse of the coin depicts one of the country's most important symbols, a detailed maple leaf. The obverse depicts the portrait of the monarch of Canada in the specific year of issue of the coin. In previous issues, one of the portraits of Queen Elizabeth II is presented, and from 2024, the image of King Charles III is presented. The denomination of 50 Canadian dollars and the year of issue of the coin are also indicated.
