The knight Tariel is one of the leading characters of the forementioned epic poem – he is madly in love with Nestan-Darejan. Obsessed with his feelings, Tariel wears the skin of a panther that reminds him of his beloved. One day, he witnesses the fight between two wild beasts – a tiger and a lion. He kills the lion to defend the tiger, expecting that the tiger will be kind to him. Instead, the wild tiger almost kills him – luckily, the knight gains a victory against the beast.
The design of the coin is full of symbols. For example, the incredible natural rocks depicted in the background are a subtle nod to Sakartvelo – the country where the author of the poem, Shota Rustaveli, was from. The masters who minted this coin paid particular attention to detail, so it is of exceptional beauty. High relief and state-of-the-art minting technologies were used.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
