The Monnaie de Paris has released the third and final gold and silver coins which are part of a trilogy featuring the agricultural symbols of France that are included in the country’s national crest. Begun in 2020, the first coin featured the first of France’s three national Audubon insignias, oak. In 2021, the second coin’s focus was on laurel, and the third coin features wheat — a symbol of growth and fruitfulness. Ears of wheat are universally considered the manifestation of physical and spiritual fertility. A sacred cereal whose grain is reborn year after year, wheat has had many uses. From antiquity to the present day and in different diverse civilizations, wheat appears as a gift from the gods, linked to the gift of life. In ancient Rome, it was thrown over the heads of the bride and groom to ensure they would essentially “go forth and multiply.”
