The 2026 Martial Eagle silver coin is the second issue in the South African Mint’s Odyssey of the Sky series. The series is dedicated to the impressive birds of prey of Africa, and following the 2025 Bateleur Eagle coin, it introduces one of the continent’s most powerful eagles, the martial eagle. The South African Mint has officially added the 2026 Martial Eagle one-ounce silver coin to its range of collectibles. The reverse of the coin depicts the martial eagle, whose scientific name is Polemaetus bellicosus. It is a large African bird of prey, characterized by broad wings, strong talons and impressive hunting power. The Lithuanian name for this species is kalingasis ekelis. The design of the coin conveys the bird’s strength, alertness and ability to control large territories from above. The Martial Eagle symbolizes power, courage, freedom and determination, and therefore naturally continues the theme of the series dedicated to celestial travel and African birds of prey. The coin is minted from 999 fine silver. It contains one troy ounce, or 31.10 g of pure silver. The minting quality is PROOF, in German polierte Platte. This finish is characterized by a mirror background and matte, clearly distinguishable relief details. Based on the technical parameters of the previous one-ounce issue of the same series, the coin should have a denomination of 5 rand and a diameter of approximately 38.725 mm.
