The coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of Ireland's membership of the European Union, highlighting a long and fruitful period of cooperation and integration with other member states.
On the reverse is the stylized inscription Éire EU50' followed by the year of issue and at the top of the coin is the year in which Ireland joined the European Union.
